Supporting FoodForward SA for
Mandela Day

FoodForward SA works every day to recover quality surplus food and redirect it to communities across South Africa.
Established in 2009, the organisation has grown into Africa’s largest food redistribution organisation. It works with farmers, manufacturers and retailers to recover food that might otherwise be lost or wasted and then distributes it through a national network of vetted beneficiary organisations.
Through this work, FoodForward SA helps provide food to close to one million people everyday. Behind that figure is a coordinated system
of food recovery, partnerships, and distribution that operates year-round.

Our 67 minutes
Last Friday, as part of Mandela Day, the DC Fishing team joined FoodForward SA’s packing event in Cape Town.
During our 67 minutes, we worked alongside a larger group of volunteers to pack and label food. It was one small contribution to the wider work FoodForward SA carries out across South Africa.
The event brought volunteers together in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban to sort and pack groceries for people experiencing food insecurity. Our task on the day was simple.
Working together, we prepared food as part of a larger packing effort.
While our time at the event lasted just 67 minutes, every packed item supported FoodForward SA’s ongoing work helping quality food reach the people who need it.
More than one day
Mandela Day creates an opportunity for people and businesses to contribute their time. For FoodForward SA, the work continues every day of the year.
Recovering surplus food and distributing it responsibly requires reliable partnerships and careful coordination. It also depends on organisations and volunteers being willing to support a shared purpose.
Our time at the packing event represented only a small part of that work. It did, however, give our team greater appreciation for the scale of FoodForward SA’s mission and the people who help make it possible.
We are grateful to FoodForward SA for welcoming us and for the work the organisation continues to carry out across South Africa.
